Step Up Your Job Search During the Holidays

The Holidays are right around the corner…please don’t slow down your job searching during the Holiday!

And many people see the holiday season as an excuse to relax, eat copious amounts of sugary goodness, and spend time with friends and family, while putting the job search on hold until the New Year.

This is a bad idea. You should continue to eat cookies and pie and watch forty year old claymation Christmas specials with your loved ones, but you should continue to send out your resume as well. Here’s why:

3 Reasons to Step Up the Job Search During the Holidays

1)Hiring Might Slow Down, But So Do Job Hunters

Although it’s true that hiring often slows down during the holidays and picks up in the first quarter, the fact of the matter is that the hiring slowdown is actually less than the job hunting slowdown. While hiring does taper off in many industries at the end of the year, the amount of job applications going out plummets, since most people assume there is no point in applying for new jobs until after the new year. This means that those who continue to hunt for jobs through the holiday season actually can see the hiring situation tilt in their favor as suddenly the proportion of available jobs to people applying for those jobs actually improves over the holidays, even though the overall availability of jobs goes down.

2) Hiring Doesn’t Slow Down Like It Used To

Never underestimate the lengths companies will go to avoid paying taxes. Hiring managers and CEO’s will often try to avoid paying taxes by spending money on search fees at the end of the year, thereby decreasing operating profits, and the size of the government’s cut. Not every company will do this, of course, but some will, and those companies will have a smaller applicant pool to dip into.

3) Stay in Job Hunting Shape

There’s a certain holiday hang over that is easy to get caught in. You had such a great time with friends and family. And the job hunt is daunting and horrible. You’ll put it off until New Years. Then Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Then until February. Before you know it, you’ve missed the post-holiday hiring surge. By maintaining your job hunt throughout the holidays, you will be on top of your game when hiring does pick up again.

Yes, it’s the beginning of November. But to take advantage of the holiday hiring shifts, you are going to need a polished and sharp resume ready to go before the holidays arrive. If only there was a place you could go to secure a service that provided you with the very best resume or CV.
